What should you ask a hiring manager during an interview?

by admin on July 5, 2019 in Ask a Recruiter, Dallas IT Recruiting

You’ve studied, rehearsed, and studied some more to prepare for your big interview. You are confident you will have quick, thoughtful responses to all of the tough questions that will be fired your way. But what about toward the end of the interview when the hiring manager asks, “Do you have any questions for me?” Are you ready for that?

You should be. This is more than likely not a pleasantry to wrap things up. A recent survey showed that over 70% of hiring managers say that questions they get from candidates are as important as the questions asked of the candidates. Well thought out questions demonstrate a level of interest and desire to contribute. What should you ask the hiring manager? That will depend on specifics and details of the position you are interviewing for. Below are 15 sample questions to help get your creative juices flowing.

What do you see as the most important role of this position?

Can you tell me about the history of this position?

What do you find most challenging about your job?

What is the biggest challenge the company is currently facing?

How does this position relate to these challenges?

What are your expectations for the person chosen for this position?

How is success measured in this role?

What would you say your management style is?

What would the ideal candidate for this job look like on paper?

What opportunities does the company provide for growth and development?

What accomplishments do you expect from me in the first six months? Year?

How does this position fit into the overall objectives of the company?

How would you describe the corporate culture here?

What do you enjoy most about working here?

What are the next steps?

Write your own questions that are specific to the position, company, and hiring manager you are interviewing with. Keep your questions focused on how you fit in with the company and how you can contribute to its success. Using open-ended questions will provide you with more insightful answers and likely make a good impression on the hiring manager.
