Career Resolutions That Work

by admin on December 27, 2019 in Ask a Recruiter, Dallas IT Recruiting

The countdown is upon us. Soon we will be wrapping up another year and an entire decade. If the past ten years are any sign, the 20s should be full of exciting opportunities for IT professionals. As the clock strikes midnight, we begin another long heralded, but seldom successful practice – the new year’s resolution. We collectively have such a bad track record at keeping our resolutions that many people have abandoned the practice, and many others will fall off the wagon before the second verse of “Auld Lang Syne”. What can you do to break the cycle and commit to career resolutions that will yield real results?

Don’t Be Too Specific

This seems like counterintuitive advice when it comes to setting goals. However, goals that are too granularly focused don’t allow for unexpected changes or unforeseen consequences and that can lead to failure. Make your resolutions more strategic, then adjust your tactics as needed. For example, setting a goal of improving productivity by 5% provides you with a measurable outcome, but allows you to adjust your plans accordingly throughout the year.

Stay Healthy

What does good health have to do with your career? Everything. You have to be healthy to perform at a high level. Make simple goals you can achieve and will embrace. You don’t have to commit to running a marathon in under 2.5 hours. Make goals like seeing your dentist regularly, having annual physical exams, exercising three times per week, etc. Oh, and drink more water. It’s good for you.

That’s All Folks

Really, that’s it. The key to successful resolutions is to keep them simple and attainable. Overloading ourselves with a lot of goals we’ll never reach will only keep us in the resolution breaking cycle. This year break the cycle. I wish you all success in the coming year and decade.
