Is it Really Possible to Achieve Work-Life Balance?

by admin on November 23, 2018 in Ask a Recruiter, Dallas IT Recruiting

More and more professionals are working from home, at least some of the time, and that’s generally a good thing. But as the saying goes, too much of a good thing… We live in a digital age that provides us with the technology to work remotely. But the other side of that coin is that with most professionals having access to their work outside of the office, many are tempted, or expected to be available at any time. Recent surveys revealed that almost half of the respondents think they should respond to work emails during dinner. It’s no wonder that 2/3 of professionals find it difficult, if not impossible to achieve work-life balance.

In this always-connected world, how do you find a healthy balance between work and home life? The downside is that it isn’t easy. The upside is that it is possible with a bit of focus and discipline. Everyone’s situation is different, but the following three tips can help put anyone on the path to a balanced life.

It is easy to get caught up in anticipating the next email or text message and dropping everything to respond right away. Along with that, how often do you get distracted by social media notifications?

Unplug and become more efficient, and less stressed. A good place to start is scheduling your available time. For example, check and respond to emails three times daily – once in the morning, once right after lunch, and once at the end of the business day. Also set aside specific times for social media interactions. When it isn’t your scheduled time, log out.

Me Time

A great way to focus on balance is to schedule time for yourself. Set aside time during the week for things that you enjoy doing and stick to the schedule. Make sure to devote some of this time to exercise. It is a great way to relieve stress, improve mental agility, and be overall healthy.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is critical to achieving work-life balance. I’ve already mentioned how important exercise is for a healthy lifestyle. But there are other factors that are equally critical. Sleep, for example, is extraordinarily important to your wellbeing. Not just getting enough sleep but getting sound sleep. Avoiding alcohol and/or caffeine immediately before bedtime can dramatically improve your quality of sleep. If you find that you feel tired, or sluggish when you wake up, you may want to see your doctor and have a sleep study. Millions of people suffer from sleep apnea, which not only deprives them of quality sleep, it is a serious medical condition.

Obviously, there are many other things specific to your situation that you’ll need to address. However, these three tips are a great place to start finding your balance.
