IT Recruiting Evolving WFH Trends

Only twelve months ago, work from home (WFH) was the rule and not the exception. Especially among IT workers, safe at home became a mantra reinforced by government scientists and echoed in the media. But now, it seems WFH works only in matters of life and death. When the largest IT employers like Apple are setting return to work policies, an important question is on every IT worker’s lips, “Is this job really worth giving up WFH?”

WFH IT Trends

The top trend in IT recruiting remains work-from-home issues. From recruiting to retention and onboarding, challenges remain. Major IT recruiter Apple recently announced a return to the office triggering major pushback. According to documents obtained by The Verge, “That Apple’s remote/location-flexible work policy, and the communication around it, have already forced some of our colleagues to quit. Without the inclusivity that flexibility brings, many of us feel we have to choose between either a combination of our families, our well-being, and being empowered to do our best work, or being a part of Apple.”

Management’s View

Managing WFH employees is also evolving. Harvard Business Review now advises not to let employees choose their work from home days, citing counterproductive divisions between in-office and WFH staff. When making IT recruiting decisions, it’s becoming clearer that companies need a knowledgeable IT recruiting partner who can pre-screen applicants. Not all employers are resisting WFH, however. According to HBR, Google, Citi, and HSBC are adopting a hybrid model.

The Newest New Normal

Touted as the New Normal, pushback against WFH from CEOs is getting louder. As cited in Bloomberg, “JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s Jamie Dimon said at a recent conference that it doesn’t work “for those who want to hustle.” The pushback? People would rather quit than give up WFH. Where does it all lead? As seen in the HBR research, who favors WFH is not uniform. With the right IT recruiting, in-office and WFH talent can find what they’re looking for.
