Online Career-Boosting Tools
Are you searching for a job, or perhaps thinking about a career change? The process of looking for a job can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are many online resources to help you navigate this. Here are six tools I recommend to my clients.
Hoovers.com
D&B Hoovers collects and analyzes enormous amounts of data on businesses, industries, and markets. It is a reliable source for financial and competitive insight.
US Bureau of Labor Statistics
BLS.gov provides an array of resources for job seekers. I strongly recommend their online Occupational Outlook Handbook. The interactive tool provides information about specific jobs, educational requirements, advancement opportunities, employment data, salaries and 10-year job outlooks for several hundred occupations.
Potential Employers’ Websites
I always recommend that job hunters carefully scour the websites of any potential employers. You want to know as much as possible about an employer before an interview, and their site can be a treasure chest of information. In addition to the web, publicly traded companies are required to release annual reports that address the financial health and outlook of the company.
Competitor Websites
Study the competition of your prospective employer. You can gain insight into the competition, along with a broader understanding of the industry at large. Who knows? You may even find greener pastures.
Assessment.com
You may have heard of the MAPP Career Assessment Test. Created in 1995, the MAPP Test is a comprehensive career test that evaluates your likes and dislikes. The test is made up of 71 questions and takes about 20 minutes to complete. The results are compiled in real time and you can see your MAPP Report immediately after completing the quiz.
Salary.com
Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can pay your bills. It’s not surprising that 2/3 of people looking for a career change say money is the main driving factor. How much are you worth in the labor market? If only there were a website where you could enter your desired position and location and get free salary data. There is, and it’s called Salary.com. They have a simple tool on their homepage where you enter your position, city, and state and they provide you with salary data. This is also a useful tool if you are considering relocation. You can easily compare salaries in your current market to those in your desired market.
