Unemployment is at a 50-year low. What does this mean for your career?

The September 2018 Jobs Report has been released. The US jobless rate currently sits at 3.7%, which is the lowest level of unemployment since 1969. Across all industries, employers added 134,000 new jobs in September. The largest growth was in the Business and Services sector, which includes IT staffing. With 54,000 jobs added, Business and Services outpaced all other sectors by more than double. This accounts for the extraordinarily low unemployment rate of 2% for professionals over 25 years of age, who have a college degree.

While this is good news overall, low unemployment rates also present challenges to both employees and employers. If you are searching for a job or considering a change, here are a few things you need to consider before accepting an offer.

  1. High demand for skilled professionals has put pressure on many employers to quickly sign talent before the competition gets them. You should avoid accepting a deal too quickly if you haven’t completely assessed how the position, company, culture, compensation, etc. fit into your life.
  2. Make sure you fully understand the compensation package, so you can accurately compare it to other offers you may have received.
  3. Learn all you can about an employer’s culture. With IT professionals in high demand, the timing is perfect to find a company whose culture aligns with your needs.

Demand for IT professionals is strong, and that can create good opportunities for your career. You may be searching for an employer who is a better fit for you. Or perhaps you would like to relocate to that city where you’ve always wanted to live. Whatever your motivation for making a career change, it’s likely that your timing couldn’t be better.
