Professional resume services can make your previous work experience look fantastic. Everything from where you went to school to how you spend your spare time volunteering can be polished to convey the quality professional you are. The finishing touch on any great resume is your reference list. Previous bosses and coworkers can be a useful resource for giving a sense of your professionalism that doesn’t come across in a Word document. Although most employers won’t check references until they’re closer to making an offer, some do that first. Here are a few tips on preparing your contacts and what to expect when people are checking references.

Making a List and Checking it Twice

First and foremost, be respectful of your contact’s time. Whether previous bosses or coworkers, everyone is busy all the time. Let them know you have them on a shortlist of references and brief them on the position you are applying for. There is nothing wrong with cherrypicking your references. Pick people who can honestly speak about your contributions and strengths. For the most part, what people will say and what employer candidates will ask is traditionally narrow. Fear of litigation can tighten loose lips, and that’s usually the info a potential employer is after. Nobody wants to hire someone else’s problems, but most people shine in better circumstances.
Checking references is part of the hiring process. Stack the deck in your favor with the right contacts who can speak to your strengths. Let BCT help you find the career you are looking for.
