The work-from-home movement has been gaining momentum in recent years, but plenty of people still miss the office. From missing out on in-person collaboration to risking being out-of-sight, out-of-mind for new opportunities, here are a few reasons why workers should consider returning to the office instead of working remotely:

In-person collaboration is key for many businesses.

Assuming you work in an office, how often do you need to collaborate with someone in-person? For many businesses, the answer is: quite often. From impromptu brainstorming sessions to more formal presentations, there are countless situations where being in the same room as your colleagues (or clients) is simply more effective than trying to communicate remotely.

You can’t beat face-to-face interactions.

There’s something about being in the same room as someone you can’t replicate through a computer screen. Whether it’s the ability to read body language or simply the fact that you can have a conversation without interruption, there are many advantages to interacting with someone in person. In fact, research has shown that face-to-face interactions are more effective for building relationships, persuading others, and problem-solving.

Working from home can be lonely.

If you work from home, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced the occasional bout of loneliness. It’s not that working from home is inherently lonely, but it can be easy to feel isolated when you’re not around other people regularly. And while there are plenty of ways to combat loneliness (joining a co-working space, for example), it’s still worth considering if you’re thinking about switching to working from home full-time.

Overall, there are several compelling reasons workers should return to the office instead of working from home. From the importance of in-person collaboration to the benefits of face-to-face interactions, many advantages to being in the office can’t be replicated through a computer screen. So if you’re considering switching to working from home, consider the pros and cons carefully before deciding.
